Hi everyone,

I'm new here, I've been reading the posts for a few weeks but this is my fist post.

I was listening to a podcast of Michael's show on learned helplessness the other day and he gave a task in that show to identify somethng you need help with and then ask at least 100 in the next week, so I'm hoping that so of you may be able to help me.

A few years ago I was very sick and one of the side effects was that I had to get up to go to the loo 3 or 4 times a night.
I'm now very well and shouldn't need to get up during the night but I still do, it's now a learnt behaviour.

So, I want to sleep peacefuly right through the night but don't know how to do this, do you have any ideas that might help me?

many thanks

Hi jeni,

Interesting post.

If there was a 'one post' answer to your dilema then i would market it and become even wealthier  Wink

A few questions though...answer as many or as few as you feel comfortable in doing.

Did you sleep through the night every night before you were sick ?

Are you taking any medication ?

Do you need to sleep through the night ?

Do you get up to pee...or just get up ?

Are you 'open' to hypnosis ?

Do you need to sleep through the night ?

Do you eat / drink / smoke within an hour or two of going to bed ?

Do you need to sleep through the night ?

Do you sleep during the day (cat-naps) ?

You will notice i asked one question more than once.

If you are getting up through the night and it is having no effect on you or your performance the next day, maybe you dont just need the sleep as much as you did. I know i used to get so wound up inside listening to people who slept for 8 hours every night, until i realised that although i only sleep for a maximum of 5 hours....that was all i needed.

I am sure other Genii will respond to your post with lots of sound suggestions.

Cheers,

Mark

Did you sleep through the night every night before you were sick ?
Yes most nights

Are you taking any medication ?
Supplements, but no medication that should wake me during the night

Do you need to sleep through the night ?
I clearly don?t need  to sleep right through the night as my life is functioning pretty well as it is now, I would just like to be able to, especially when camping ( it can be a long cold walk to the toilet block)

Do you get up to pee...or just get up ?
I get up to pee, never just get up.  If I try to just go back to sleep I lay there thinking about the fact that I need to pee until I give in and just get up and pee.

Are you 'open' to hypnosis ?
yes

Do you need to sleep through the night ?
I don?t need to sleep through the night but would like to as I think I would have more energy during the day.

Do you eat / drink / smoke within an hour or two of going to bed ?
don?t smoke, very rarely eat that late but do drink within 2 hours of sleep, I have tried not drinking in the evenings but previously that hasn?t worked (but may be worth giving it a try again)

Do you need to sleep through the night ?
I don?t need to sleep through the night but I think I want to because that is what you are supposed to do, I think it?s a bit of a control thing.

Do you sleep during the day (cat-naps) ?
yes most days, I have previously tried not having naps so that I would be really tired and sleep through the night but that didn?t work, I was just shattered for a fortnight.

I don?t think I need to sleep through the night, my life is really good and I?m really happy with it. I think it would just be nice to have the choice about getting up or not especially when I?m not at home.

Cheers

Hi jeni,

The part i would concentrate on is :

'I think i want to because that is what you are supposed to do'

Begin by asking youself a few questions about your reply

Cheers,

Mark

thanks Mark,

I'll do that.
I have to say that that was the part that felt a bit out of balance when I wrote my answers.

many thanks

Hi Jeni,
sleeping is such a wonderful thing- what a good goal to set...have you used hypnosis yet?
I would also consider a session of NLP with a professional practioner- this is definately a subject to check out consciously and more importantly UNconsciously

take it easy!

Dear Jeni

My partner used to have a chronic skin complaint that meant he was awake most of the night due to the iritation.

We devised a routine to relax him through visualising himself in a cinema, watching a film, and disassociating himself from the image.  It has worked amazingly - he can now sleep most of the night - and so can I!  Let me know if you would be interested in more detail.

hi Topcatkitten,

that sounds really interesting, I've used something similar to let go of old hurts in the past and that worked really well.
I would be very interested in hearing more details.
thanks

Hi have you tried whats known as segment intending ?

recognise that entering into a sleep stae will be a new segment of your living day. or life experience
and so as you are lying there with your head on the pillow
getting ready to go to sleep
set forth your intention for that time
it is my intention for my body to completely relax
it is my intention to awaken rested
refreshed and eager to begin my day
it is my intention now completely relaxed to drift slowly and peacefully off to sleep

repeat this gently as you lie in bed and slowly say it softer and softer until you fall gently asleep

good luck
love and light

5 HTP   or  St Johns wort...just a suggestion.
And I too---  have a problem falling asleep and if i awake the morn at my exact alarm time, I feel i have only slept minutes. But if I wake to go to the loo --I DO NOT LOOK AT THE CLOCK --but think KOOL i still have more time to sleep...or DrEaM in my case -cause I HAVE A VERY lively dream life....
