That has to be the first list I've ever seen with 'Drop Dead Fred' in it!  Cheesy

I did a computer game voice-over job with Rik Mayall once - I played young pizza delivery boy Bud Tucker who saved the world from his evil Dick Tate.  When we walked into the recording booth, I pitched my performance at about a 7 on a scale from 1 - 10 while he came in at about 33 on the same scale!  Cheesy

He was one of the funniest people I've ever met, and I'm glad to see him getting his due on the site at long last...  Cool

WOW!  I'm a fairly big "The Young Ones" fan, which was my first experience of Rik.   I adored him!    Thank you so much for the great story!!!

Many people haven't seen Drop Dead Fred.  It's a little cheesy and an 80's/early 90's flashback - but the idea of an adult with an imaginary friend... how the adults in the main character's life tried to squash that part of her (including her creativity)... how she grew up along the way - just a wonderful little story!  Smiley

A very cute and REALLY fun to watch movie was Music & Lyrics with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore.

Also, a wonderful film I just watched is called "The Fountain" by Darren Aronofsky.  I own all of his films and they just keep getting better and better.

rocky horror :-) they play it at midnight once a month in sydney, and everyone dresses up and sings along... many with *hemhem* alternative lyrices.
shrek
fight club
the lives of others (that last line, where he says "it's for me" and it really is)
beautiful people
billy elliot
palindromes (horrifying, but incredibly well done)
ten canoes (an aussie one)
borat
monty python
erin brokovich
alices restaurant
the english patient

i also saw a fantastic interesting film called "miss navaho" about a beauty pagent where the contestents like, butcher sheep n stuff. It was a real eye opener.

And drop dead freds a great movie :-)

Huh  As I sit here and read thru all the films, I am baffled!!!  So many mentioned are 'must see' for me, for each evokes deeply into the archtype's in each of us, the Hero, Damsil, Orphen, Mentor etc.... and all draw a level of emotion.
So, after long concideration, I like the ALL!!!... but... in fairness....

"you can heal your life" with Lousie Hay
"what the bleep!", fantastic
"the matrix", deeply true in so many ways.. how many are still plugged into ... (fill in your blank)
"batman begins", finally someone got it right!!!
Any spiritual cinama circle films, wow, thought moving.
"the lord of the rings, trillogy"  than you Peter!!!
top six,, but my list would go on too too too long.

While I have many films I can sit and watch over and over... (like "Cast Away" with Tom Hanks, or "The Incredibles". Don't ask why, but I never get bored...) the one I would say is a must see (that I haven't seen others mention) is:

"Princess Bride". It came out around 1987, and is fantastic.

I'd like to recommend 'Harvey' as a 'must-see' film. I think it's still my favourite. Though there are so many great films, old and new, if I had to only pick one, it would be this. Wouldn't it be great to have your own pookah? When you see the film you'll know what on earth I'm talking about! Hope it makes you smile-I'm sure it will.

What a shame I seem to have missed this topic, as I only just became a member.  I'll try posting a reply, just in case, as I love films, particularly old classic ones.
My must see films are:

Brief Encounter
Brighton Rock
Grand Hotel (the original 1932 version)
Holiday (Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn)
Philadelphia (Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn)
Now Voyager
Mrs Dalloway
Enchanted April (BBC film)
Wonder Boys
Good Night and Good Luck
The End of The Affair (adaptation of the Graham Greene book)

What a wonderful topic.
I can think of many, a lot of them have already been suggested by others here, so I'll go ahead and add one, that seam to have missed the posts (very very undeserved I think):

Invictus

- directed by the greatest man on earth, Clint Eastwood, this is the movie about Nelson Mandela (Nelson is played by the one and only, Morgan Freeman and you will also love Matt Damon as François Pienaar - the rugby player who... nah, I wont tell. You don't want to know about it on beforehand, should you decide to see the movie).

To me, this is a kind of movie, to end all movies. If you let it, it will fill you with joy, hope, inspiration and well, summon more water in your eyes than you can hold back without a tissue...
