Hi all,

Anyone read any books, have a dummy's guide to, or just have ways to improve one's self-discipline?

Hi

First have stuff you want to do, second get it done.

If it's important enough for you to get to it, all the motivation and energy will be there, if you doing stuff to make other happy or to try to live up to others expectations, then you might want to consider if that how you want to be living.

We all have responsibilities Family, work, friends etc and each one needs our attention is a number of different ways, if you go with the flow and what make you happiest, you might find you be getting a lot more done than you thought possible.

If your having to force yourself in to doing, thing's outside your general life responsibilities, then, then ask yourself what are you getting out of that, and is it worth it.

Ask yourself what are the differences from the things you have done in the past that you wanted to do and enjoyed doing, and thing's you just did, and did them half heartedly.. what are the mental and emotional differences? and if you had to draw each construct on paper what would each on look like? now of you was then to imagine making each picture life size, and was to first step in the the (-) and think about doing stuff how does that work for you? and what are you noticing in your thinking and feeling? and if you was to step out of that and shake it off, Then step into the (+) and think about doing things, what happens now, what are you noticing in your thinking, feeling and general sense of well being? Now ask yourself this, what are you not thinking about that if you did would give you all the energy and motivations to get things done? then use that as a stepping stone a guide to.......

Alexander,

I just finished reading Peck's book...Road Less Traveled and he speaks quite a bit about self discipline.  There really isn't much of "how to" to be disciplined.  I experience it that discipline is more of a result.  For me, the key is the commitment.  When I really really know what I am committed to creating and I create the road map to get there, the discipline just shows up!  In addition, I am a coach so obviously I suggest you find a good coach, they will constantly reflect what you are committed to...consider it a structure or tool to support creating the discipline.  I would be more than happy to share more!  Have a good weekend!

Here's something Steve Chandler  sent out recently in a Clubfearless email:

Only the Disciplined are Free

  We human beings have just begun to learn the power of self-control.  It's a field that has almost no information in it yet.  It is a new frontier of human exploration and adventure.  So far, we can only hint at its true potential.

    For hundreds of years, self-control was thought to be something that only a few people had.  It depended on our having a certain gene, perhaps. Or something permanent in our character: a characteristic.

    But we are now learning that it depends on no such thing.  The truth is, self-control is simply a common skill.  Like the skill of playing a guitar. It is something any and all of us can learn.  As we continue learning, we can learn more chords. We can learn more songs. We can learn more of everything.  We can be the Eric Clapton of self-control.  And when we apply this discipline to our finances, our health, our energy, our relationships, we find that self-control rocks.

Also he pointed out (I'm paraphrasing here) - Self Discipline is remembering, and to keep reminding yourself of what you really want to do.
