Hi,

I am an NLP Practitioner of little experience — attended a course for the first time in April and I don't work in any sort of practice. I didn't attend the Practitioner course with an aim to make money. I was interested to learn more about NLP and also to see if I could use it to help a couple of friends sort out some of their problems. Since 'fixing' my friends other people have started approaching me to ask if I can help them too. So far I have advised them to seek help from more experienced practitioners. Some people have come back to me insisting that they want me — which is very flattering.

I'm guessing that before I say that I would be prepared to help (whether I take payment or not) I should consider liability insurance. Am I right? If so, would you please help me make a list of UK providers of suitable insurance so that I can phone around?

Hi Kenton

If you are taking money and/or people are coming to your place for help you might want to go that way.

If it helps, I get my PI insurance through http://www.westminster-indemnity.co.uk/. Their cover includes for NLP Practice and other therapies as well. I pay about £200 for £2 million cover.

I also understand that Tower Gate do cover: www.towergateprofessionalrisks.co.uk.

Some of the NLP membership organisations do cover too, so you could check them out.

Cheers

Would recommend www.towergateprofessionalrisks.co.uk, £2m cover for around £160 as a limited company!

Be insured,

George.

Hi,

I can also recommend www.balen.co.uk .  Whilst I'm not sure if they cover for NLP alone, I am covered for coaching and Touch for Health Kinesiology.  I have £2.5 million cover for £111 a year.

As mentioned before, get yourself covered

Nobody should be seesing clients without insurance, unless they really want to open themselves up to potential legal action! All assistants on the McKenna team have to show updated insurance details

Hi Kenton,
I've just gone with http://www.westminster-indemnity.co.uk/. £119 for £1m (Thanks Carl) Smiley.
The website was very easy to use done and dusted in two minutes, print your certificate Smiley.
I have not been seeing clients professinal but for a couple of £'s a week why take the risk? and I do a bit of assisting at Paul McKenna's weight loss seminars so I guess I need to be insured now.

KR,
Mike.

Thanks all, you've been very helpful. No point telling you who I went with as it's a personal choice — but I'm now insured Smiley

Of course, they say that insurance is invaluable — until you need to claim on it! Let's hope that I never find out that my insurance doesn't actually cover me for the precise claim that I need to make!

Of those companies mentioned, has anyone any experience of actually claiming on the insurance?

I have never fortunately had to claim insurance as a practitioner, but suggest a key factor is to always maintain good records of sessions with clients. I audio record all sessions, so I have a compete record. Sometimes its useful to let the client have a CD of the session, so they can listen back. In provocative therapy Frank Farrelly uses this technique to great effect! (see www.provocativetherapy.com)
