Hi

I wonder if anyone has any tips for me regarding my problem.  I find I get too over-excited when things start to happen.  e.g. last week someone offered me some work and I was so excited about all the possibilities for them (I've been working on Michael's 'giving value' ideas - which I love) that I was firing back emails, which I think can sometimes be a bit over-whelming.  But it has a physical effect on me too - I get all tight in my stomach and my shoulders tense as I'm typing.  I just get far too excited about what I'm doing to think sensibly and clearly.  Then I can mess it up by going over the top and not thinking carefully about what I'm doing.  Since I work in IT (website design, databases etc.) rushing off in all directions at once doesn't make for good coding!

I have another problem and I think it is related.  I can also get extremely defensive about what I do.  If someone asks a question, which I perceive as criticism then my hackles are up straight away and I'm on the attack, when quite probably it was just a question.

I think all this comes from being too involved - too wound up in what I do.  I do get really excited and enthusiastic about this stuff and what I can make it do for my customers,  and I want to retain that enthusiasm but without going over the top.

So I would really appreciate any tips on how to deal with my excitement/defence rush - and I'd love to know if others have the same problem.

Hi RoseMarie

The first thing that sprang to mind was Larry Crane's release technique - www.releasetechnique.com - which will help you just let those feelings go.

I used to be like this myself, and have (mostly) leveled myself out.  This is partly from bitter experience of over-excitement followed by disappointment!  And partly because I created a vision of how or who I would like to be when I am hugely successful - and calm, peaceful and relaxed came pretty near the top of that list!  So now I practice being relaxed, peaceful and calm so when opportunities come in, I still get excited, but quickly centre myself and have a kind of 'calm excitement' (perhaps after leaping around the room for a while to get it out of my system!).

Hope that's helpful

Thanks Donna.  Yes, I recognise the bitter disappointment after over-excitement - and the leaping round the room  Cheesy  The Relsease Technique sounds really interesting too.  I'll look into that.  But its also really good to know other people have the same reactions.

I do wonder if meditating would help and from you saying that you practice feeling calm ready for when opportunities come in, then it sounds like it might help.  Mind you finding time to meditate is difficult but if I felt it was really going to help then perhaps that would help me prioritize it more.

Thanks again,

Hi Rosemarie

You are welcome!  Re meditating - I have messed about with meditation for years, never quite 'getting it' - I either fell asleep or fidgeted for 10minutes to an hour.  Then I realised the times I can sit still for ages without any thought are: when I'm watching the sun set, stargazing or watching a thunderstorm...although I can't do these every day, I also do 'walking meditation'.  I like the idea that if you do it with full consciousness, anything can be a meditation.

There's a lot of stuff out there about meditation - find the one that works for you.

Hi there,
I also know this very very well. My suggestion is: start running workshops on getting exited for people who lack exitement in their life and get rich. wouldn't that be exiting?!
I think it's funny so many people are bored most of the time, not enough energy to make the coffe and we jump up and down like coffe beans and think of how to stop that...
It's all relative you see...exitement is a lovely thing: it's just energy!

Why not use it creatively, i.e to go run around the block or do some push ups, that way you get fit at the same time as happy!!

My CEO asked the other day: what is going on with you? i saw you skipping down the street. indeed I had a skip at 11am. But you see, I get back feeling great and make brilliant and convincing sales call. Now that's efficient. Any course on motivation would have cost them thousands!!

So my point is: it might be nice to see that you are a fantastic and energetic person and that energy loves to be nurtured. With that it will centre itself more easily, too.

Meditation is great by the way- I have done a fair bit and Yoga- I lived in a Yoga Ashram in NY for a while.
You don't have to meditate to be balanced but it does teach you so much ....

You might prefer dancing or spinning or whatever...

So the tip from me is: celebrate yourself, do something fun and THEN get back to the opportunity.
Sing the song: I am so exited- I just can't hide it from Footloose was it?

lol.

Thanks for that Evelyne - that made me smile.  I can imagine you skipping down the street.  And yes, a good plan, do something with the energy and then come back more focussed.
