In the UK there are 3 main stores that are pretty much a cartel for books. These are WH Smiths, Waterstones and Borders. Each of these will have a central buyer who will decide which books to stock and how many to take from a publisher. Of course these decision makers get literally thousands of requests, so they will have their own criteria in deciding what is worthy of shelf space! My experienced is that self published books are not given as high a priority as books published by a publisher.
Also remember that any spoken word product needs an ISBN number and bar code in order to be sold on any electronic system...

ISBN number, as mentioned before...
are you looking for a publisher? or to self-publish? publishers usually handle distribution...
ask someone at a bookstore how it works... maybe they can tell you where they get most of the books of similar subject (distributor? - Publishing house?) and then contact them.
you may want to approach local book sellers (small shops) and see if they will carry it... if it sells well - you will be able to take your track record to bigger stores.
maybe try Hayhouse Books...

Hi
Another Idea would be to request people who want to buy the book to do via their locale bookstore/shop that's another way of getting into book shops- so self promotion world help you a lot as well, Yahoo, Google have a list of groups related to NLP, Life-coaching and Hypnosis, it would take you only a few short minutes to join them, and to stick a promotional tag line liking to an intro to the book, yes you will have to make a few contributions to the groups in taking a little time to say hello and making a few comments- to any topic that is being talked about- yet it a free and easy way to advertise a book related to people who are into NLP etc.
Maybe even creating a blog and having a book promotional page set up- yet the thing is you will need to do a lot of self-promotion NLP-connections has something like 6,500 plus members, and they have a place on site for you to advertise for free, the Publisher will have a flag system to tell them if an one book is getting some active sales and if the the book seem to being more active then its a cue for them to promote more-
Yet if people don't know about the book, it wont get any attention- so do some leg work, and promote it.

As I said in our recent phone conversation, the blog is a good idea and IMO use a google blog as that helps with site rankings. I'm always a bit wary of people who quote statistics re memberships numbers, as they mostly don't hold water! I have seen some quite ludicrous hype around people quoting visitors to sites and semiar attendees, which have time and time again (let me put this diplomatically) proved to be a tad optimistic rather than realistic. Bottom line is to seek out multiple delivery systems and to appreciate buiding up momentum for a business to succeed takes time and energy and above all paying attention to what is producing what! Either way good luck

Hay Nick
Maybe you need to be a little wary of being wary! Yes quoting site states is not very reliable and even if out of the 6,500 possible members, there was say only say a 1000 or 750 or 500, that's a 1000 or 750 or 500 more people knowing about your product- than before which is all good, the main point I was trying to make, with the above example is that they are hundreds upon hundreds of NLP related Internet forums and groups, that if one was inspired to do so, could take a small block of time each day or week, and get free promotion by doing a little bit of leg work! as you know Nick self-promotion is a very on going active process.
If people don't know you and what you have to offer then unless you get out there and make a sounds out in the world then no one will ever find out about whats on offer! the NLP competition is growing month in month out- with more and more NLP books and training companies becoming more active- a lackluster approach to self-promotion just wont cut it! that does not mean becoming a spam king- yet making a valued contribution to peoples life's and potential in personal development and education- I think every one has heard the "don't judge a book by it's cover" metaphor, yet if people don't know you have a cover to share then the book within that cover, will never see the light of day- and you, or me are the cover of the book or product being promoted and if people don't know your out there- then your work is not going to get put into the open domain..to a wider audience..

Nothing wrong with self promotion, but I mention this a lot of actual data from a variety of different sources! Actually although there are lots of NLP events adertised, many don't actually run due to poor response. The TCNLP Oct Prac has a numbers of people who had courses cancelled due to lack of interest and ALL these were promoted on a newsgroup! As an ANLP accreditor and SNLP trainer I get to interact with a lot of different trainers and training schools and I track a lot of "what produces what" which is why a number of folks interviewed me re passive income generation recently! Products have a better chance however, so I agree with you on that one and I have chatted to Peter on the phone to offer what help I could and pass on what I have found works best!

Actually there is usually not a lot of profit in books unless you have a bestseller. I have friends who have had books published and sold worldwide that have made less income in a year from them than I would make in a month! However its the right way to go and congradulations on getting something out there, its more tham most do!

Good job- I think even though- you might not get a huge amount of profit from the book it does- give you some extra marketing value which is always good- I am hoping to get book of my own published some time in the near future- so reading this topic as be very helpful.
