I sometimes get the question whats the difference between NLP and Coaching. I know that coaching is a process and NLP is a tool. But I have never been to a coach I have only practise NLP. So please "whats the difference?" How the work and so on......

For me, Plenia, the question is like someone asking what's the difference between a Ferrari and a race track (or a lion and a zoo) - you can talk about one in relation to the other, but they're completely different things and can both exist independent of one another!

NLP is (officially) "an attitude and a methodology which leaves behind a trail of techniques."  So I can coach people with an NLP attitude and utilising NLP techniques, and I can also coach them from any one of a hundred different points of view using thousands of different techniques.  Coaching (for me) is the process of bringing out the best in someone and making the best better.  It is a context in which a coach can 'be there' for a client in a way that makes it easier for the client to reach their goals.  NLP is (for me) a wonderful set of filters I can work from and tools I can use that tend to make me a more effective coach.

Hope that helps, or that if it only serves to muddy the waters you find it to be "quality" mud... Smiley

love,

Hi

Do you need to be a chef to bake a cake?  No! yet you do have to have a level of confidence and more importantly a good level of competence, the thing with NLP/Hypnotherapy/ coaching they are not classed as mainstream, or governed by the same rules and licences, like Psychology, psychotherapy, and counselling, you could if you wanted too, set up a NLP/Hypnosis and Life coaching school, with out any training,  as they are in effect self governing  and self accrediting bodies, that creates  what is hopefully a well represented set of values, that practitioners agree too.

Life coaching is classed as an education tool, and is not governed by any academic standing, so you can call your self a life coach, if you wish.

Hi all,

One thing i do know, is that there is a huge difference between a Trainer and a Coach.

The main difference being:

You cant play tennis in a pair of coaches !!

The muddy water becomes so clear when there is plenty of chlorine in it, yet when us kids jump in the puddles the mud seems to become fun  Wink

This is interesting.  Does anyone have any suggestions of what to look for and what questions to ask when looking for a prospective NLP  Coach?
